The business rates policy is set by central government. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) assesses rateable values which are used for working out business rates bills.
There are currently a number of business rates schemes to support small businesses.
Eligible retail properties can receive up to £1,000 relief on their 2014 Non-Domestic Rates bill. Criteria that must be met includes:
- The rateable value of the property is £50,000 or less.
- The property is occupied.
- The property is wholly or mainly used as a shop, restaurant, cafe or drinking establishment.
Small Business Relief
This relief is available for businesses that only use one property with a rateable value less than £12,000.
A temporary 50% occupied rate relief will be granted for new occupants of retail premises that have been empty for a year or more at the point of occupation. The relief is available for 18 months to businesses that move into an empty property on or after 1 April 2014 and on or before 31 March 2016.
