Parks
Winner of the prestigious ‘National
Green Flag Award’, the beautiful
Walkden Gardens, offering peace and
tranquillity, are situated at the corner
of Marsland Road and Derbyshire Road,
close to the centre of Sale. A variety of
outdoor ‘rooms’ off the main ornamental
walkway surrounds a large theatre lawn
within which public events are held. The
Friends of Walkden Gardens are helping to
restore the gardens to their former glory.
The grade II Victorian dovecote which
belonged to Sale Old Hall has recently
found a new home in the gardens. Sale Old
Hall, built in 1603, was demolished in
1930. The 30 feet high octagonal dovecote
designed by Thomas Worthington, whose work
includes the Albert Memorial in Albert
Square, Manchester is all that remains.
